Why This Matters
Accidents and dental issues can happen anytime, and dental care can be expensive without coverage. Importantly, BC school districts generally do not automatically pay for student injuries or dental care. Parents or students must cover those costs or buy extra insurance. That’s why many families choose a student accident or health plan. In short, knowing your coverage helps you avoid surprise bills and makes it easier to get care when needed.
Overview of Plans
K–12 Student Accident Insurance
BC school districts do not provide automatic dental benefits, but most districts allow parents to buy optional accident insurance for their children. These voluntary plans run for a full year (typically Sep–Sep) and cover students both at school and at home. Participating in one of these plans means dental costs from accidents (as well as other emergency expenses) will be partially reimbursed by the insurer.
Post-Secondary Health & Dental Plans
Most BC universities and colleges include a student health & dental plan (often run by the student association). Full-time students are usually automatically enrolled via tuition or student fees. Each plan has its own rules, but all aim to cover routine dental care for students. If your school has a student society or union, check their website for plan details.
